David Dewing’s early career was as a furniture designer. He moved into the museum sector in 1979, first as a curator at the Museum of London, then as Director of the Geffrye from 1991. He has a broad interest in English furniture and interiors of all periods, including contemporary design and craft, and London history. His particular research interest is in caned chairs of the late 17th and early 18th centuries, on which he has published, most recently in Regional Furniture, 2008. He is a member of the Advisory Committee of MODA (Museum of Domestic Design and Architecture, Middlesex University), Chairman of the Regional Furniture Society and on the Court of the Worshipful Company of Furniture makers.
